Trips to Orcas Island have simply resulted in one thing for the Coupeville football team in recent years: a loss.

In fact, head coach Ron Bagby couldn’t recall the last time the Wolves won on the road against the Northwest A/B opponent.

He certainly won’t have trouble remembering now.

Coupeville defeated the Vikings 33-18 on Saturday afternoon, moving its league record to 2-1 and overall record to 3-3.

“That’s the first time I remember winning at Orcas in a long time,” Bagby said.

Things didn’t look good for the Wolves early, however.

Coupeville came out sluggish in the first quarter, falling behind 12-0.

“We looked like we were still on the ferry sleeping,” Bagby said of his team’s performance.

After recording a safety, the Wolves strung together three straight touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 24-12.

Senior J.J. Marti broke into the end zone first, scoring on a 20-yard run. Mike Bagby then completed passes of 65 and 35 yards to Trevor Tucker and Marti, respectively, for scores.

Coupeville allowed Orcas to inch closer as the Vikings scored on their first possession of the second half.

That was as close as things got, however.

Marti tacked on a 24-yard TD and newly converted kicker Mike Bagby added on a field goal to round out the Coupeville scoring.

Marti ended the day with 24 carries for 111 yards, while Bagby was 8-for-11 on pass attempts for 180 yards.

The Wolves have their homecoming game against Charles Wright Academy (2-1, 4-1) at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14.
