A sweep in singles and a thrilling win in first doubles carried the Coupeville High School tennis team to a 3-2 win over visiting Granite Falls Thursday, April 25.

After two relatively easy singles wins, Coupeville found itself in two tense doubles matches.

In first doubles, Holly Craggs and Iris Ryckaert went into overtime to squeak by in two sets 7-6(9-7), 7-6(8-6).

In second doubles, Julia Myers and Emily Gallahar recovered from losing the first set 6-1 to win the second 6-4, but the duo lost a tight final set 7-6(8-6).

McKenzie Bailey and Sydney Autio lost the third doubles match 6-2, 6-3.

Amanda d’Almeida won 6-3, 6-2 in first singles; and Allie Hanigan won 6-4, 6-1 in second singles.

Coach Ken Stange said, “It was exciting to see more close matches. Players learn more from close matches won or lost than they do in blowouts.”

Coupeville (8-2) travels to Port Townsend to face Chimacum at 3:45 Friday, April 26.

Stange said, “It’s exciting to play a team we have yet to face this season.”
