Coupeville downs ranked Friday Harbor

Day puts in an inspired season-high 25 points

Don’t tell the Coupeville boys basketball team there’s nothing to play for the remainder of the season.

Three days after learning it was mathematically impossible to advance to the post-season, an inspired Wolves team defeated a Friday Harbor program ranked in the top 10 in various state polls, 64-59, on Friday night.

“Our kids are so loyal, our kids don’t skip practice, they work hard and practice every night,” CHS head coach Randy King said after the victory. “I’m proud of them, I’m really proud of them.”

Key to the Wolves’ upset win was the play of guard Blake Day. The senior scored a season-high 25 points, including 6-of-6 free throws in the final 1:30 of the fourth quarter to seal victory.

“I was just feeling it tonight,” Day said.

Along with his clutch free throw shooting, Day also went 4-for-7 behind the three point line. His largest shots came with the Wolves trailing 17-13 halfway through the second quarter. In a span of 30 seconds he scored eight straight points, including back-to-back three pointers that gave CHS its first lead. From that moment on, the Wolves only trailed once more.

“I don’t care, we won,” Day said of his point total. “I’ve never tried to care about my points. When I shoot, I want to help the team win.”

The game started out bumpy for CHS. Cold shooting and four first-quarter turnovers resulted in a 13-6 deficit with a minute to go in the first quarter.

Hustle plays and limiting themselves to just two more turnovers the rest of the contest, helped the Wolves battle back.

“Everyone was hustling,” Day said. “Everyone played all 32 minutes.”

Coupeville fell behind for the first time since the second quarter, 48-47, with 4:50 left in the game after the Wolverines’ Paul Guard nailed a three-pointer.

Junior Mike Bagby, who had been relatively quiet, came back and nailed a three pointer on the Wolves’ next possession and Coupeville never trailed again.

All starters scored for Coupeville, while Trent Diamanti came off the bench in the second quarter and provided a nice spark by scoring the Wolves’ final four points for a 25-19 halftime lead.

The win moved Coupeville to 6-7 in league and 8-11 overall. Friday Harbor dropped to 9-4 in league and 14-4 overall. The Wolverines have already sealed the second and final district playoff berth in the Northwest A.

CHS closes its season out on Friday, Feb. 11 at home against Concrete. Tip off is set for 5:45 p.m.

Coupeville will look for revenge against a Lion team that knocked them out of the playoff picture on Jan. 28 with a 66-59 upset. It was the only league victory of the season for Concrete, who sits at 1-12 and 4-15.

“I want to get that one,” Day said. “Concrete beat up on us and they shouldn’t have.”

There will be no junior varsity game on Friday.
