Missing several key players, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team was no match for Sultan and Archbishop Murphy last week.

The Turks tripped the visiting Wolves 71-27 Tuesday, then Coupeville returned home Friday after six road games to fall 68-28 to ATM.

Leading scorer Ben Etzell was out of both games with a staph infection and Carson Risner missed the Sultan game because of illness. Starter Caleb Valko was injured in the second quarter at Sultan and missed the second half.

Then came the biggest blow, Aaron Trumbull suffered a scary fall and head injury in the Archbishop Murphy game.

Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said the impact of the missing players was “huge” and left the Wolves with “no scoring.”

The outcome of the ATM (8-4, 10-5) game became secondary when Trumbull was injured.

Trumbull’s mother, Shelli, said in an email Monday that Aaron “has a concussion, but he is doing well. We are thankful it wasn’t more serious.” He will miss the remainder of the season.

Trumbull, who was defending on a fast break, jumped to block a shot and was undercut by the ATM shooter.

Trumbull went parallel with the ground and hit his head on the floor.

Smith called the scene “horrific.”

After being checked out by paramedics, Trumbull was taken to Whidbey General Hospital for observation. He was released Friday night.

“After Aaron went down,” Smith said, “it took the wind out of our sails.”

Smith said Nick Streubel (10 points and seven rebounds) and Aaron Curtin (seven points and seven rebounds) had solid games for the Wolves.

Morgan Payne finished with five points, Valko four and Risner two.

Wiley Hesselgrave moved up from the junior varsity and saw some varsity time, Smith said.

In regard to Sultan (7-4, 8-9), Smith said, “There is not much to write home about.  I was disappointed; we could have played more aggressively.”

Streubel topped the Wolves with eight points. Payne scored six, Joel Walstad, in his varsity debut, five, Trumbull four and Valko two.

Coupeville (0-12, 1-17) closes out the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday in a home game with King’s (10-2, 13-5). Results of Tuesday’s game with Granite Falls (4-8, 8-10) were not available at press time.

The Wolves open the playoffs at Lynden Christian Wednesday.
