As the Coupeville High School girls basketball team heads into the district playoffs, it hopes to earn a trip to the regional tournament and gather a little respect for the Olympic League along the way.

The Wolves (15-4), the champions of the Olympic League, begin the West Central District 3 1A tournament against Charles Wright Academy (14-5), the No. 2 team from the Nisqually League, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Sumner High School.

Coupeville is the lone Olympic League team remaining in the tournament. The conference’s two other teams, Port Townsend and Klahowya, were eliminated in the single-elimination rounds.

Now the Wolves will battle three Nisqually teams for one of the three available regional berths.

Nisqually League champion and eighth-ranked Bellevue Christian (18-2) plays Seattle Christian (10-6), the third-place Nisqually team, Wednesday in the bracket opposite Coupeville and CWA.

The two winners meet for the district title at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Tacoma’s Foss High School. The outcome will determine the top two seeds into the regional.

The two losers play at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Sumner High school. That winner will claim the No. 3 seed to regional; the loser is finished for the season.

In the earlier single-elimination rounds of the district tournament, Vashon Island defeated Port Townsend 46-35 and then lost to Charles Wright 61-17. Seattle Christian clubbed Klahowya 60-35.
