Winning its third straight match, the Coupeville High School tennis team blitzed visiting Lakewood 6-1 Monday, April 20, in a nonleague contest.
“Today’s tennis was straight and to the point,” coach Ken Stange said. “Most of the matches ended quickly, which was a good thing. Most of the girls are still recovering from Saturday’s marathon of tennis.”
The Wolves (2-0, 4-3) won’t have much time to recover; they have three more matches this week. Next is Klahowya (0-1, 1-7) in a conference match at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday, April 21) in Coupeville.
In the win over Lakewood (1-6), the Wolves’ Jacki Ginnings won a two-and-a-half hour first singles match 7-5, 2-6, 10-7.
“Even though she lost the second set, she didn’t wear down,” Stange said. “She wore her opponent down, though. After the match, Jacki looked like she could play another one. She continues to impress me.”
Wynter Thorne took over for Valen Trujillo, who couldn’t compete Monday, in second singles and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win.
“Wynter hit the ball with such great depth, making it seem as if her opponent was stuck to the back fence,” Stange said.
In her first varsity singles match, Ivy Luvera, usually doubles player, won 6-4, 6-2.
“Ivy got off to a bit of a rocky start,” Stange said. “However, at 4-4 in the first set, she stepped up her game. It was a solid performance.”
In first doubles, freshmen Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger won 6-3, 6-2.
“They played aggressively and consistently, just the way their previous opponents have played,” Stange said. “This is just the start. They’ve got 3.5 more years of high school tennis, and they will collect many wins along the way. Their efforts netted them the very well-deserved Players of the Match honor.”
McKenzie Bailey and Jazmine Franklin were 6-2, 6-4 winners in second doubles.
“They had a bit of trouble in the second set, but they seem to have a knack for finding a way to win,” Stange said.
Ana Luvera and McKenzie Meyer picked up the other Coupeville win, rolling 6-0, 6-1 in fourth doubles.
Sydney Autio and Micky LeVine lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in third doubles.
Bree Daigneault and Haleigh Deasy collected an 8-2 JV win.
