County recycling is not done at a loss | Letter

Editor,

Thank you for the article about trash and recycling and informing readers of the new rules. Standardizing the recycling rules will be helpful.

One statement in the article needs clarification, however. Island County does not run recycling programs at a loss. All costs of recycling are covered by the sale of the materials and by charging “tipping fees” which are the fees paid for taking trash to county facilities for disposal.

The county does not use tax money to subsidize recycling. Solid Waste funds are separate from the county’s general fund.

I do not work for Island County. I am retired from another county where I did budgets.
