County honors top employees

A batch of awards, commemorations and special recognitions were bestowed on a bunch of government employees in September by the Island County Commissioners.

The county’s employee of the month honor for August went to Mindy Paredes, and administrative assistant who has served five years in both the county’s human resourches and budget director’s office.

In presenting the award, Dick Toft, human resources director, had high praise for Paredes’ achievement, calling her a “self-starter” with “lots and lots of energy.”

A handful of employees received certificates for their years with the county: Myron Gabelein for 30 years in the road department, Jan Ford for 25 years as a commissioners’ assistant, and public works employees Richard Jones and Janet Kearsley for 10 years each.

Sheriff’s deputies James Kuenle and Derik Piechowski, assessor Todd Burlington, public works employee Jill Wood, and superior court employee Robert Elerick were recognized in the five-year catergory.

Phil Cohen, county storm and surface water manager, received special recognition for earning state certification as a licensed geologist and hydrogeoligist.
