Come home this week

Coupeville, Oak Harbor homecomings coincide

Oak Harbor and Coupeville high schools are both holding homecoming festivities this week that will culminate in football games Friday and dances on Saturday night.

Monday marked the beginning of Spirit Week at Oak Harbor High School. Each day has its own theme: Crazy Day, Barbie and Ken Day, Western Day, Pick a Player Day and Class Color Day.

Tonight is Oak Harbor High School’s annual Hootenanny talent show. The annual show features 12 acts among which are three bands, a comedian, poetry readings and a ukulele performance, according to Starlette Casey, ASB advisor.

Festivities kick into full gear Friday with a homecoming assembly that afternoon. Approximately 40 alumni will be on hand to enjoy the school assembly.

Following the school day is the Royalty Tea, which alumni are also invited to attend, Casey said.

Then, around 5 p.m., the traditional Snake Dance begins at the high school and goes to Memorial Stadium. Seven floats, the marching band and the cheerleaders are integral parts of this year’s procession.

The homecoming court will be crowned during halftime of Friday’s football game against Stanwood at Memorial Stadium. Students voted for their king and queen late last month.

Coupeville kicked off its homecoming celebration Monday with its annual Chautauqua talent show. The annual event featured singers, dancers and bands who performed in front of a lively crowd of classmates, teachers and parents at the school’s performing arts center.

The events continued Tuesday with “cram the stands,” at which students are encouraged to attend the home volleyball and soccer games against Kings.

“We just try to get the kids out to sporting events,” said Kyle Nelson, ASB advisor at Coupeville High School.

Wednesday features Top Gun Volleyball in which the boys in each class square off against each other and the seniors traditionally come home with the victory.

Students will cram more stands on Thursday. Only this time they will board a rooters bus and head down to South Whidbey to watch the soccer and volleyball teams compete.

Friday is the homecoming game against South Whidbey. The halftime show features floats from each class.

The king and queen will be crowned during an assembly earlier in the day. Students voted for their homecoming court Tuesday.

Of course students dress in costumes throughout the week.

Monday was toga day and Tuesday was twin day. Today is Whidbey Island tourist day and the week finishes up with nerd day and spirit day.

The festivities conclude Saturday with homecoming dances.

Coupeville’s takes place in the Performing Arts Center while Oak Harbor’s takes place at the high school’s Parker Hall.
