Collision near Coupeville sends three to hospital

Two Oak Harbor women and an infant involved in a rear-end collision on Highway 20 were transported to Whidbey General Hospital Monday. According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Dave Martin, the three were traveling southbound in a 1998 Dodge Neon at about 4 p.m. when they rear-ended a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta just north of Coupeville near the intersection with Sherman Road.

Two Oak Harbor women and an infant involved in a rear-end collision on Highway 20 were transported to Whidbey General Hospital Monday.

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Dave Martin, the three were traveling southbound in a 1998 Dodge Neon at about 4 p.m. when they rear-ended a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta just north of Coupeville near the intersection with Sherman Road.

Martin declined to identify those involved but did say the women were sisters, ages 21 and 22, and that the infant is five to six months old. None were seriously injured in the collision, but they were transported to the hospital via ambulance for treatment.

The driver of the Jetta was at the scene and identified himself as Cecil Talbot, 82, from Oak Harbor. He said he was not hurt but was a little shaken up.

“I was stopped waiting to turn and bam,” Talbot said.

According to Martin, the driver of the Neon reported looking into her review mirror seconds before colliding with the Jetta. While it was unclear at the time just how fast she was going, Martin said he would issue a citation for “unable to control speed prior to a collision.”

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, he said.
