Coaches hall of fame honors Oak Harbor’s Matzen

Matzen began his 28-year golf coaching career in 1977 when he took over the boys program.

Former Oak Harbor High School coach John Matzen will be inducted into the Washington State Coaches Association’s golf coaches hall of fame at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor.

Matzen began his 28-year golf coaching career in 1977 when he took over the boys program, leading the team until 1980. He returned to program in 1993 and coached until 2008. Matzen doubled up and coached the Wildcat girls team from 1993 until 2000.

In 1996, his boys team placed second and his girls team fourth in the AAA state tournament.

The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. with a social hour. Dinner will be served at 6, followed by the program.
