CHS track sets pace for improvement

The Coupeville Wolves track team hosted Friday Harbor, LaConner, and Archbishop Murphy at a Northwest A track meet last Friday. They didn’t win the meet, but many on the squad saw a marked improvement.

The Coupeville Wolves track team hosted Friday Harbor, LaConner, and Archbishop Murphy at a Northwest A track meet last Friday. They didn’t win the meet, but many on the squad saw a marked improvement.

With less than 10 athletes out on the girls side, the Wolves don’t have much depth. What they lack in numbers they make up for in talent.

Junior Amy Mouw competed in four races on Friday (the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meters), winning them all, while junior distance runner Brianne King overcame an injury to win the 1600 meters.

“Amy’s the one to look out for, she can win all four of her events,” said Jason Meyers, who along with Jerry Helm coaches the team. “And Brianne has been battling a knee injury, but she won the 1600 pretty easily on Friday.”

The boys have a much bigger squad, but they lack experience. The team is filled with many freshmen and upperclassmen competing in track fo the first time in their high school career.

“We have a lot of first-year guys out for the team,” said Meyers. “It’s the last year before they take off and they wanted to do something for the school before they leave.”

Meyers noted junior Dan McDonald (shot put, 100, 400-meters), freshman Nathan Goodin (shot put),senior Matt Helm (high jump), and senior Robert Fasolo (200 meters) as athletes who are performing well.

“We’re doing all right, pretty good for a lot of seniors who have never done track before,” said Fasolo, who is in his first season on the team. “I wish I would have done it my first three years.”

For once the Wolves track team saw some decent weather. Friday wasn’t especially warm, but it wasn’t snowing or raining either.

“At least its not raining today,” said Fasolo as he readied himself for the 200 meters. “We had a meet in LaConner where it was horrible.”

With spring slowly creeping up Meyers believes that the warmer weather will lead to more improvement.

“Everyone is having a good time,” he said. “With the weather starting to get better I think we’re going to start seeing some better times.”

The squad travels to Friday Harbor on Friday for a meet with the Wolverines.
