CHS boys drop two

Just as quickly as the opportunity for an upset over the state’s seventh ranked La Conner Braves was there, it was gone for the Coupeville boys Friday night.

Just as quickly as the opportunity for an upset over the state’s seventh ranked La Conner Braves was there, it was gone for the Coupeville boys Friday night.

Tied 10-10 with four seconds left in the first quarter, the Braves made their move. A three-pointer by David Stephens ended the first and a three-pointer by Luke Keel started the second quarter.

La Conner continued to add on to its second-quarter lead, going up by 11 on another three point shot with 2:25 remaining in the first half. After that, the Braves built as large of lead as 18 points and never let Coupeville get any closer than 10, on their way to a 65-50 victory.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” CHS head coach Randy King said.

Coupeville’s struggles came from cold shooting. The Wolves hit just 17-for-48 shots (35 percent), while the Braves connected on 24-of-47 (51 percent).

On a positive note for Coupeville, they committed a season-low 11 turnovers. It was the shot selection, however, that had King concerned.

“We had some guys trying to force things and we took some bad shots,” he said.

Junior Mike Bagby led the Wolves with a game-high 17 points.

La Conner had four players in double figures, led by Jake Roth with 16.

Overlake 77, Coupeville 56

Turnovers and an opponent that was on fire with its shots led to an early deficit and an eventual 77-56 loss at Overlake Saturday afternoon.

“We ran into a real buzzsaw Saturday,” King said.

Coupeville struggled to hang onto the ball with 21 turnovers and Overlake capitalized, scoring several easy transition buckets in the first half.

J.J. Marti had a season-high 27 points for the Wolves, who dropped to 2-3 in league and 4-6 overall.
