Coupeville track and field athletes Jon Chittim and Kyle King proved over the weekend they are not only among the state’s elite, but they are two of the top competitors in the Northwest.
Both Wolfpack athletes grabbed a pair of second place finishes competing at the prestigious Washington/Oregon Meet of Champions in Oswego, Ore.
Chittim, a CHS senior and 2006 1A state champion in the 400 and 200, finished second in the 400 meters, running a personal best of 49.39. He entered the race with the slowest time among the other seven competitors, but coach Eric Lindberg said none of that mattered when it came down to it.
“Stats are only stats,†he said. “You still have to run the race.â€
Dean Michael, the 4A Washington champion from Stadium High School, finished just three-tenths of a second ahead of Chittim at 49.08.
Chittim also set a personal record in the 200 with a mark of 22.76 and placed fifth.
Attrail Snipes, the 3A state champion from Seattle’s Rainier Beach, won the race in a blazing 21.71 seconds.
Chittim also competed as a member of the 400 meter relay for the first time ever. His group finished fourth behind two Oregon schools and another Washington relay.
King, a sophomore and 3,200 1A state champion, earned his second place finish in the 3,000 meter run. His 8:50.64 was comparable to a 9:25 3,200 meter, which would have been a new personal record. He edged out 3A Washington state champion Kevin Zelenak (8:52.06) of Black Hills. Oregon’s Isaac Stoutenburgh won the race in 8:43.35.
“I am proud of both Jon and Kyle as they are both two of the hardest working athletes I have ever coached,†Lindberg said. “This event is a great event to end the season on.â€
The Washington boys defeated the Oregon boys 381-277, while the Oregon girls topped the Washington girls 331.5-299.5.
