A six-run first inning spurred Sedro-Woolley to the Little League Softball 9/10 District 11 tournament title over Central Whidbey Wednesday, July 6, at Rhododendron Park.
Sedro-Woolley continued to roll after the big first inning, winning 17-5 in four innings to sweep the best-of-three series and secure a berth in the state tournament.
Central Whidbey, coached by Lark Gustafson, started the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Gwen Gustafson singled and circled the bases on a stolen base, groundout and wild pitch.
Sedro-Woolley countered with its six-run first, tallying with the help of three walks and five errors.
Central Whidbey scored again in the second inning when Sofia Peters reached on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Two walks and several stolen bases and wild pitches allowed Sedro-Woolley to score twice in the bottom of the second, making it 8-2.
Central Whidbey cut the lead in half with two runs in the third. Gustafson reached on a fielder’s choice after a Maddie Georges’ walk, and Savina Wells singled. Gustafson and Wells advanced around on stolen bases and wild pitches.
Sedro-Woolley put the game out of reach with a nine-run third.
Central Whidbey scored in top of the fourth when Alena Osborne slashed a single and followed the game’s scoring pattern of stolen bases and wild pitches to reach home.
