No cattle were injured at an unusual accident in the field with the so-called “cow crater” near Coupeville Thursday evening.

Witnesses reported a roll-over accident after seeing a pickup truck lose control on Highway 20 just west of Sherman Road and plummet down an embankment toward a walking trail and the field of cows.

The the truck didn’t roll, but just kept on truckin’.

“I was looking around the field, wondering where it went,” said Oak Harbor resident Phil Hamilton, who witnessed the accident.

He was expecting the pickup to be wrecked, but he spotted it driving around in the pasture, which is famous for the big crater in the middle. He said it appeared that the driver was trying to escape, but got caught in the cattle gate.

Sgt. Mike Beech with the Island County Sheriff’s Office said he, a state trooper and a Coupeville deputy were at the scene in a couple of minutes. He said the driver was trying to get away, but the trooper immediately took him into custody.

Hamilton said the pickup, which was headed east toward Coupeville, nearly collided with another car while trying to pass it. He said the driver lost control and rode on the edge of the road for a distance before plunging down the embankment.

The truck took out two fences at the bottom of the hill, including one that keeps the cows off the highway.

The trooper arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the state patrol.
