Celebrate summer with Centrum

Centrum celebrates the living tradition of chamber music Friday and Saturday evening during Centrum’s Summer Chamber Music Festival, June 27-28.

Centrum celebrates the living tradition of chamber music Friday and Saturday evening during Centrum’s Summer Chamber Music Festival, June 27-28. The event marks the return of Centrum’s 30th Anniversary Ensemble-in-Residence, The Cypress String Quartet. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times for their “…musical astuteness and virtuoso resources,” the Quartet will be joined by pianist Peter Mack, violist Heather Bentley, and clarinetist Gregg Miller. Tickets are $20, $17, age 18 and under $9. Concerts begin at 7:30pm, at Joseph F. Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

Audiences will hear classic repertoire and modern work created in response. On the program are pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonin Dvorák, Ludwig van Beethoven and the works of contemporary composers Benjamin Lees and Jennifer Higdon, whose piece “Impressions” was specially commissioned by the quartet in 2003.

Also on the Friday program are Beethoven Trio in B-flat for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op.11 and Mozart Quintet in G minor for Strings.

The Saturday June 28 performance showcases another contemporary American composer, Benjamin Lees. His String Quartet No. 1 was completed in 1952 and given its premiere in Los Angeles in 1953. Also on the Saturday evening program: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791): “Kegelstatt” Trio in Eb, K. 498.Dvorák Quintet in A Major for Piano and Strings, Op.81.

2003 is Centrum’s 30th anniversary. Founded by the Washington State Arts Commission, Washington State Parks and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Centrum, in at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, is the Pacific Northwest’s premier center for arts and creative education.
