Neither team brought its “A” game to the court in Friday evening’s Cascade League basketball game between the Coupeville Wolves and the Cedarcrest Red Wolves.
Both teams had major problems putting the ball in the basket and turnovers also created havoc at times.
The Red Wolves managed to put together a strong second half, outscoring the Wolves 29-13, and handed Coupeville (4-2 league, 7-5 overall), its second straight league loss, 38-28.
Coach Blake Severns was at a loss for words after the game.
“We just didn’t play very well out there tonight,” he said. “We couldn’t get our shots to go in at all. We didn’t make that many mistakes, we just shot the ball poorly.”
A slow moving first quarter in which both teams scored just one basket from the floor resulted in a 4-4 tie after the first eight minutes of action.
Coupeville perked up somewhat in the second period scoring 11 points to take a 15-9 lead, but that was the only period where the Wolf Pack would score in double figures.
The Wolves’ shooting went completely south in the third period as Cedarcrest opened with a 7-0 run to knot the score 21-21 heading into the final quarter.
In the final eight minutes, the Red Wolves went on an 8-0 run to take a 31-23 lead and when Coupeville senior Shawna West fouled out of the game with 3:17 left, Cedarcrest began getting a lot of second-shot opportunities.
Trailing late in the game, Coupeville was forced to begin fouling and Cedarcrest converted 10-of-15 opportunities from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
Megan Smith was the leading scorer for Coupeville with seven points.
Erica Taylor had 12 points for the Red Wolves and teammate Anne-Claire Den Hartog scored 10 points.
Cedarcrest 66, Coupeville 62
Coupeville had three players score in double figures against Cedarcrest Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to offset a game-high 22 points from Alex Fromm, as the Wolves dropped their fourth Cascade League game, 66-62, to the Red Wolves.
Cedarcrest led 22-13 after the first quarter before Coupeville battled back with 21 second-period points to trail 27-24 at halftime.
The Red Wolves scored 20 points in the third quarter to hold a 57-49 advantage.
In the final period, Coupeville’s defense went to work holding Cedarcrest to just nine points, but the Wolves couldn’t overcome the Red Wolves’ lead.
Alex Evans scored 19 points, Geoff Wacker had 12 and J.D. Wilcox scored 10 points for Coupeville that fell to 2-4 in league games and 6-6 overall.
