The Cedarcrest High School baseball team took advantage of Coupeville mistakes to break open a close game and defeat the host Wolves 9-1 Monday, March 21.

The Red Wolves (2-2) held a slim 1-0 lead going into the fifth inning, then scored five runs, four unearned, to pull away. Coupeville came within inches of minimizing the damage when a two-out Cedarcrest hit eluded the diving Ty Eck in right field and drove in three runs.

The Wolves failed to generate much offense, producing only four hits and stranding eight runners, six in scoring position.

All four hits came over the first three innings, and the Wolves’ lone run came in the second inning when Gabe Wynn walked, Jake Hoagland singled and Wynn scored on a balk.

CJ Smith collected two singles; Dane Lucero had the other Coupeville hit.

“Tough game,” coach Marc Aparicio said. “We played well through the fifth.”

Aparicio added that Hunter Smith “pitched well,” Matt Hilborn “had a great day at third” and Eck “played amazing in right field.”

Coupeville (2-2) entertains Sequim (2-0) at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 22.
