Cats undefeated after three games

Arlington is Oak Harbor’s latest victim Oak Harbor next faces 1-2 Marysville-Pilchuck Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

New week, new opponent, same results. The Oak Harbor Wildcats are 3-0 with their third consecutive rout of a team picked to finish above them in the WesCo North.

The 49-21 drubbing of Arlington last Friday night did have some suspense. For the first time this season the Wildcats trailed in a game. These Cats didn’t like the slap in the face and responded angrily. It took just two plays and 37 seconds for Oak Harbor to regain the lead. From there it was a 28-7 run through the second half.

After a scoreless first quarter the Cats drew first blood. Following a Cody Parker interception, the Wildcats went to work from the Arlington 36 yard line. Quarterback Lenny Serfling rolled to his left and flipped a short pass to Blake Ward for the score. Chad Asmus kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The defense held on three plays and following a short punt the Cats were back in business from the Eagle 34. Serfling wasted little time, taking off on a 34 yard scamper on a quarterback draw for the touchdown. Asmus’ kick was off the mark and the Cats led 13-0 with 5:21 remaining in the half.

Arlington responded quickly as quarterback Ben Bourasaw fired a quick bullet to Ben Bodewig on a short slant pattern. Bodewig split the secondary and raced 65 yards for the Eagle score. The PAT was good and the score stood 13-7 at the 5:08 mark.

Two plays later Arlington pounced on a fumble at the Oak Harbor 17.

Again the defense stepped up and the Eagles faced a fourth and 21 from the Cats’ 27. Bourasaw threw into a crowd and Bodewig made a circus catch for a first and goal at the one. On first down Bodewig went up and over the pile, flipping into the end zone. The PAT gave the Eagles a 14-13 advantage with 2:04 left in the half.

Just two plays later Serfling hooked up with John Lobbestael for a 44-yard touchdown. Ward converted a two-point conversion and Oak Harbor led 21-14.

The Wildcats opened the third quarter with a 10-play drive that culminated with a four-yard touchdown run by Ward. Asmus booted the try to make it 28-14.

Moments later Kenny Barner came up with an interception and the Cats were on the move again. After a holding penalty made it first and 20, Kyle Veach took a middle screen 15 yards, Ward broke off an eight yard run and Serfling dumped off a pass in the flat to Parker that he took the distance, destroying a would-be tackler inside the five yard line and bulling his way in. Asmus again was true for a 35-14 lead.

Arlington mounted a long drive to cut it to 35-21 but after Grant Bull came up with an interception, Oak Harbor once again had the short field. On third and 20 Serfling again had his number called.

He took off around the right side, cut back across the field and ran 38 yards for his second touchdown. The sound of the air exiting the

Eagles was deafening as Asmus drilled the PAT with 4:12 to play in the final quarter.

Adam Diaz hammered in the final nail on a four-yard scoring run.

Serfling finished with 76 passing yards and 86 yards running the ball. The “Committee” rushed for 181 yards with Parker gaining 71, Bull 55, Ward 29 and Diaz 26.

Asmus again proved why he is among the best defensive linemen in the league. “We could not block him,” said Eagles coach John Boitano.

Arlington continually found themselves facing second down and 11 yards to go as Asmus led a defensive charge that was in the Eagle backfield all night.

When asked about the 3-0 start coach Dave Ward replied, “I thought we would have to be 2-1 to have a chance. This has been fun, every game has been different. Tonight we ran Lenny at them. He is a very good athlete and can make plays. Both of his touchdowns were called plays for him to run.”

His team is one with an obvious chemistry about them. Senior captain Kyle Veach talked about the bond. “This shows what can happen when you are a close knit team. We showed we have a lot of heart and a lot of talent.”

And they have the only unblemished record among 19 teams in the Western Conference.
