Cats stay unbeaten, drop Everett 42-14

Running game grounds Seagulls

Opposing football teams in the WesCo North Division have to be prepared for just about anything when playing the Oak Harbor Wildcats.

For the past two games, Oak Harbor employed a passing attack to earn victories over Meadowdale and Snohomish, but Friday’s game against Everett also featured a strong rushing attack.

Chris Valencia carried the ball 19 times and scored three touchdowns as the Wildcats defeated the Seagulls 42-14.

Valencia’s three TDs raised his season total to five.

“Chris ran the ball well and the line was pretty solid blocking for him,” coach Dave Ward said.

Tony Thulin netted 68 yards on three carries and Brendan Kays added an additional 66 yards on seven carries.

For the game, the Wildcats rushed the ball 56 times for 211 yards.

Ward said it’s always tougher to defend a team that doesn’t care. One that will run it if you come up or throw it if you stay back.

Marshall Lobbestael was 17 for 32 in passing good for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He connected with Kays on a 10-yard scoring strike in the third quarter and Jake Rouser hauled in a 12-yard pass for the final score of the game.

Rouser also scored on a 5-yard fumble recovery in the third quarter.

“Our passing game was a little bit shaky, but we had some big plays throwing the ball,” Ward said.

For the season, Oak Harbor is averaging 395.4 yards per game in total offense including 1,063 rushing and 915 through the air.

The Wildcats held a 14-7 halftime lead before the Seagulls tied the score early in the third quarter.

After that it was all Oak Harbor as the Wildcats scored 28 unanswered points to put the game away.

The Wildcats are on top of the league with a 4-0 record and a 5-0 overall mark, and host 3-2 Stanwood at Memorial Stadium for homecoming on Friday.

Ward said Stanwood is a physical team that has been in a lot of low-scoring games this year.

“They play good defense and they have a couple of running backs who run low and are really tough kids,” he said. “They don’t throw the ball much, so we are going to have to get our pad level down and maintain a surge at the line of scrimmage.”

Friday’s kickoff against the Stanwood Spartans is set for 7 p.m.
