Oak Harbor football coach Dave Ward couldn’t have scripted a better outcome for the Wildcats’ homecoming game Friday night.
OHHS executed its offense and defense to near-perfection and used almost its entire roster as they thumped last-place Mount Vernon 54-7 in front of a packed Memorial Field.
“The offense kind of loosened them up…we just kind of just established the momentum from there,†Ward said.
After forcing the Bulldogs to punt on their first possession, Oak Harbor immediately capitalized.
Junior quarterback Marshall Lobbestael capped an 8-play, 63-yard drive with an 8-yard play-action pass for a touchdown to senior Cameron Kays.
That was just the beginning of a theme for the Wildcats, who gained 453 yards of total offense for the night.
A large chunk of those yards came on the ground where Oak Harbor racked up 304 from 11 different ball carriers.
“We’ve got young linemen, but they’re just pushing them off, they’re doing a great job out there,†senior fullback Sean O’Brien said.
O’Brien had good reason to thank the offensive line.
The 5-foot-10, 176 pound running back, went for over 100 yards for his second straight game, rushing 13 times for 108 yards and two TDs.
“A fullback’s normally good for five yards and they’re getting me 10 or 12,†he said.
Senior tailback Gabe Vest also had a productive night. He ran just six times, but had 86 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown run.
“It’s a nice inside-outside combo with Sean and Gabe,†Ward said. “It really sets up the play action and the receivers are catching the ball and Marshall’s hitting guys in stride.â€
Lobbestael was efficient as usual at quarterback. The junior completed 8-of-13 passes for 131 yards and two TDs. His second TD pass came with just 24 seconds left in the first half on a 12-yard lob in the right front corner of the end zone to sophomore Roderick Rumble.
The score gave OHHS a 34-0 halftime lead and they never looked back.
“We kept the momentum going at halftime and that allowed us to sub a little bit and play some more guys,†Ward said.
Others scoring second-half touchdowns for the Wildcats included sophomore running back Chris Valencia with two and junior running back Seldon Hazelo with one.
Aside from offensive production Ward was thrilled with his defense.
On 24 rushing attempts, the Bulldogs only had 60 yards. Most of those came off one 40-yard run. Mount Vernon passed for 128 yards, over half of which they received in the fourth quarter from back-up quarterback Josh Etringer.
“They didn’t move the ball much on our first team, in fact our third team was pretty stiff against them,†Ward said.
Oak Harbor recorded foursacks, two from Matt Davison and one from Blake Bebee and Jake Rouser. The Wildcats also forced three turnovers, including an interception and blocked punt from Bebee.
With the victory Oak Harbor improved to a perfect 5-0 in the Western Conference North and 6-0 overall. The Wildcats are tied for first place with Arlington, who they face at home in two weeks.
Ward wanted to make it clear, however, this week’s game at Stanwood can’t be overlooked.
“You can’t even think about Arlington,†Ward said. “People in town keeping talking about Arlington and I say ‘whoa, whoa.’â€
This week’s opponent, Stanwood (3-2, 4-2) is currently tied for second place in the WesCo North with Cascade. They handed the Kentwood, a top 10 ranked 4A team, a loss on its own field earlier this season.
“They’ve got a big quarterback who can throw hard — they’re going to air it out a bit,†Ward said. “They’re scrappy, they’re hard hitters and they play good defense.â€
Friday’s game is also Stanwood’s homecoming — the second consecutive road game OHHS has to play at an opponent’s homecoming.
“This is our third one (homecoming) in a row so maybe we’re used to it,†Ward said jokingly.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Stanwood High School.
