After completing the most successful football season for Oak Harbor High School in 20 years, there shouldn’t have been any surprises when the 2002 Wildcats were heavily rewarded with WesCo North All-Opponent honors.

In all, 14 Cats took home all-conference honors, claiming 19 mentions overall.

“It’s pretty safe to say it’s the most we’ve had in a long time,” head coach Dave Ward said.

Topping the list with the most all-conference awards was senior Grant Bull, who received four. He was named as first-team wide receiver and first-team return specialist. Bull, who was an integral part of the Wildcat offense, scored a school record 16 touchdowns and totalled 96 points for the season. He also gained second-team honors for defensive back and punter.

“He’s got a great combination of good size, speed and athletic ability,” Ward said.

Senior Gerrid Warner also earned first-team honors on both offense and defense for tight end and defensive end.

“He’s tall, aggressive, he’s got good speed and plays hard,” Ward said. “He helped anchor our strong side of the offensive line, which helped us run for over 2,000 yards.”

Senior quarterback Lenny Serfling led the WesCo North voting for first-team quarterbacks in a division full of solid candidates.

“Lenny didn’t get much attention at the beginning of the season,” Ward said. “He was probably our most improved player from year to year.”

Serfling proved to be an offensive machine in 2002, throwing for 1,534 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also rushed for four touchdowns and caught one.

On defense, senior lineman Chad Asmus and senior linebacker Cody Parker had impressive seasons and it reflected in the voting. Both led their respective positions with first-team selections.

Senior Brent Bebee, who gained first-team honors as an offensive lineman, was the only member of the Wildcat offensive line to be selected to the all-opponent team.

“The O-line was definitely an important part of this team,” Ward said. “Even though we didn’t get many all-league honors we had one of the best O-lines in the league.”

Oak Harbor also gained several second-team honors.

Senior Kyle Veach, who along with Bull lead the Wildcats in receiving, finished just shy of claiming first-team honors.

“They don’t often give the top two spots for one position to one team,” Ward said.

Receiving second-team honors were juniors Blake Ward, Nate Metcalf, Ryan Lange and Adam Diaz. The Wildcats will need these players to step up after losing the majority of their all-league players to graduation.

“There are some real good seniors we are going to have to replace the holes for,” Ward said.
