A 65-year-old woman may have caused thousands of dollars in damages when she drove her white Mazda Miata convertible through the storefront of an Oak Harbor mailing center Saturday.
Officer Mel Lolmaugh of the Oak Harbor Police Department said the driver apparently mistook the gas pedal for the brake.
The woman suffered minor cuts to her face after the airbag deployed and broke apart her glasses. She was transported to Whidbey General Hospital as a precaution.
Pony Mailing and Business Center owner Mike Clewell said that fortunately, the store was closed at the time. The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m.
Clewell said the woman is one of their box holders and had a key to the building to pick up her mail that afternoon. The store is located on Pioneer Way, next to All Island Lock & Key.
The crash shattered two large window panes, the door pane and knocked out some exterior bricks and signs.
The repairs are already underway, Clewell said, and the business will continue to operate as usual. He suspects the repairs will cost about $5,000.
“I heard from police that every six months or so, someone in town manages to pull these things,” Clewell said, adding that he was the unlucky one this time. “We’ll see who it is in the next six months.”
