Car accidents mar holiday weekend

Four people were hospitalized as the result of two separate one-car accidents that occurred on Whidbey Island over the weekend before Christmas.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. Dec. 23, 22-year-old Oak Harbor resident Reysan Reyes was driving a 1999 Audi west on Madrona Way near Sherman Road west of Coupeville. Reyes lost control of his car which collided with an embankment and rolled onto its side, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Riding with Reyes were two passengers, 25-year-old Oak Harbor resident Nelson Jones and 24-year-old Coupeville resident Jason Malisch.

Malisch and Jones were transported to Whidbey General Hospital where they were treated and released on Dec. 24. Reyes was transported to Whidbey General Hospital and then transported by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. As of Thursday morning, officials at Harborview Medical Center couldn’t provide any information about Reyes’ condition or status.

The State Patrol alleges that Reyes was driving under the influence and charges against him are pending.

On Dec. 22, an Oak Harbor man was hospitalized after crashing his car north of town.

Jeremy Harvey, 34, was driving a 1990 Ford Probe east on Ault Field Road. At approximately 1:22 a.m., Harvey crossed the westbound lane, went into an embankment and collided with a number of trees. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Officials there couldn’t provide any information about Harvey’s condition.

The State Patrol alleges the cause of the accident was excessive speed and charges against Harvey are pending.
