Camano man faces eighth DUI

A Camano Island man could face a prison sentence if convicted of his eighth DUI in 15 years.

A Camano Island man could face a prison sentence if convicted of his eighth DUI in 15 years, according to the Island County Prosecutor’s Office.

Robert Carlson, 35, appeared in Island County Superior Court March 31 and asked to be furloughed because of a sickness in the family and a need to get his house ready to sell. The judge, however, ruled that he should continue to be held in jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

The deputy prosecutor went over Carlson’s criminal history, which included seven prior DUIs — three of which were felony DUIs. A DUI becomes a felony if the person has three or more prior DUI-related offenses within ten years.

Prosecutors charged Carlson in Island County Superior Court Feb. 2 with felony DUI, driving with a suspended license and violation of ignition interlock requirement.

If convicted of the charge against him, Carlson could face up to four years and nine months in prison under the standard sentencing range.

According to a deputy’s report, Carlson was driving a pickup on Camano Island Jan. 30 when he sped to more than 85 mph in a 50 mph zone to pass a car. He continued to drive at about 70 mph in a posted 35 mph zone and drifted into the oncoming lane, the report states.

The deputy pulled the truck over and noted the odor of marijuana and alcohol. Carlson admitted to drinking three beers but refused to give a breath sample, the report states.
