Archbishop Murphy stopped the Coupeville High School boys winning streak at five by defeating the host Wolves 67-41 Friday, Feb. 4.

The Wolves (6-8, 8-12) now hope to keep their season alive when they travel to either Lynden Christian (13-6) or Meridian (9-10) for the sub-district Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. The two Northwest Conference schools are just one game apart in their league standings and the final outcome won’t be determined until after Monday’s games.

The winner of the sub-district game will meet either Orting or Port Townsend in a match to determine who will move on to the tri-district. The loser will be eliminated.

Coupeville coach Randy King said Archbishop Murphy used its athleticism to both extend its defense and challenge the CHS guards and to handle Hunter Hammer in the post.

King said, “They did a nice job taking away our perimeter game, and we couldn’t get Hunter on track.”

The result was a tough offensive night for the Wolves.

Coupeville turned the ball over on its first two possessions to help the Wildcats bolt to a 9-0 lead. The Wolves finished with eight first-quarter turnovers and ATM finished with an 18-8 first-period lead. The ‘Cats upped the gap to 34-18 at halftime.

Ben Hayes’ 18 points accounted for much of Coupeville’s offense. No other Wolf scored more than Hammer’s six. Ian Smith and Nic Anthony added four points; Mitch Pelroy, Tyler King and Scott Davidson scored three each.

The win helped Archbishop Murphy (12-2, 14-5) tie Cedarcrest for the Cascade Conference title.
