Al Koetje cracked a lot of jokes about Don Boyer before slipping a ribbon with a large medallion around his neck.

Boyer had won Rotary International’s highest award — named a Paul Harris Fellow.

Koetje, a former Oak Harbor mayor, presented the award Friday before an overflow crowd of Oak Harbor Rotarians and Navy League members at the Yacht Club.

Boyer won recognition from Rotary for raising money for education and a host of other community improvements during his business career and retirement years. Paul Harris Fellows also have donated at least $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation, which pays for scholarships that send young people around the globe.
