“A 12-year-old boy who was hit after he jumped into traffic on Deception Pass Bridge Wednesday is recuperating from serious injuries at Harborview Medical Center.Phillip Renoud of Bellingham was in satisfactory condition at the hospital Friday afternoon. He was upgraded after being listed in serious condition Thursday with head and abdominal injuries and broken bones.According to the State Patrol, Renoud abruptly entered the roadway in front of a northbound 1996 Ford pickup towing a trailer. The driver, 67-year-old William Johnson of Sedro Wooley, and passenger, 65-year-old T. A. Traylor of Oak Harbor, were not injured but the truck sustained $700 in damage. The accident was reported at 4 p.m. and brought traffic to a near-halt for over an hour. The volume of traffic going across the bridge and the great number of pedestrian sightseers who walk the scenic bridge makes for a relatively dangerous mixture. To make the bridge safer for pedestrians, the Department of Transportation is building a pedestrian undercrossing this fall so that people will no longer have to cross lanes of traffic to get to the other side of the bridge.”
