An SUV hit a 9-year-old boy walking home from Broadview Elementary during the blustery storm Thursday afternoon.

The boy was crossing the street at the intersection of Southwest Sixth Avenue and Southwest Fairhaven Drive just after 4:30 p.m. when he was struck, said Oak Harbor Police Chief Ed Green.

A 24-year-old Oak Harbor woman driving a Dodge Durango was heading northbound on Fairhaven Drive. She told police she thought the crosswalk was clear and didn’t see the boy.

The incident report didn’t cite the weather as a factor, but it was dark, windy and rainy, Green said. Police determined the cause of the incident was inattention.

The boy’s parents drove him to Whidbey General Hospital where he was treated and released.

Last month a distracted driver struck a 12-year-old girl on her way to Oak Harbor Middle School.

In 2011, the school district and city worked together to make $360,000 in improvements to crosswalks near schools, adding solar-powered LED pedestrian signs and lights embedded in the street.

Neither of these last two incidents occurred in crosswalks with the lights. A 13-year-old girl was hit in 2012 using one of the lighted crosswalks on her way to North Whidbey Middle School.
