Boy arrested for allegedly making Snapchat school threat

A deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the alleged threat on Oct. 3.

A 14-year-old South Whidbey boy was arrested this week for allegedly sending a threatening message on Snapchat, according to court documents.

A deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the alleged threat on Oct. 3. A 15-year-old girl received a message from the boy on Snapchat, an instant messaging app, that showed an image of a handgun sitting on a bed with the message, “Don’t come to school tomorrow unless you have my $5,” according to the deputy’s report. The message ended with a devil emoji.

The deputy wrote that the girl felt threatened by the message and was afraid to go to school the following day.

The report indicates that the victim and the boy had met several months prior to the incident. The boy’s first day of school on South Whidbey was supposed to be the following day, but instead he was arrested, according to the report.

The boy appeared in court Island County Juvenile Court Oct. 4 and was released to the custody of a relative. Prosecutors charged him Oct. 6 with felony harassment.

Jo Moccia, superintendent of South Whidbey School District, sent out a letter to South Whidbey families describing the incident. She wrote that the student had not attended schools in the district and will not be attending any in the future.

Moccia outlined the precautions the district takes to ensures that schools are safe, which includes keeping doors locked, conducting emergency preparedness drills and working with law enforcement directly.
