A 46-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of threatening his roommate with a bow and arrow, according to documents filed in Island County Superior Court.

Prosecutors charged Stewart Yates Jan. 16 with assault in the second degree. He pleaded not guilty Jan. 28.

Lt. Mike Hawley with the Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hang-up 911 call at a Hersig Road home Jan. 12. At the home, the alleged victim said Yates was drunk on whiskey, pushed him and strangled him with a necklace, Hawley wrote.

The man claimed he broke free and Yates went and got a compound hunting bow and arrow. Before Yates drew back the arrow, the man punched him in the face and escaped, the report states.

If convicted of the charge, Yates would face from six months to a year in prison under the standard sentencing range.
