A sparkler bomb floating in the water prompted the partial evacuation of the Oak Harbor Marina Thursday morning.
Such bombs are made by packing Fourth of July sparklers tightly together and igniting them.
After the bomb was discovered at approximately 9:15 a.m., the entrance to the marina was blocked and the A dock at the marina and nearby storage units were evacuated, said Mark Soptich, chief of the Oak Harbor Fire Department. Several people crabbing near the boat launch were also evacuated from the scene.
The bomb, which eventually ended up in a five-gallon bucket before firefighters arrived, was a pipe approximately six-inches long and several inches in diameter with caps on each end and a waterproof fuse.
Soptich said the Explosive Ordnance Detachment from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station arrived, X-rayed the device and determined it was packed full of sparklers. EOD personnel will dismantle the bomb, Soptich said.
“It’s very important to have the EOD team really close,†Soptich said.
Firefighters searched the area for any similar devices, but they didn’t find any, Soptich said.
The marina was cordoned off for approximately 45 minutes and the Oak Harbor Police Department is investigating the incident.
