Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers finished its second year with a bang up job.

Jim Short, head organizer of the repair blitz day for homeowners in need, said the May 1 workday was a big success.

“By our count, we had 120 people working and with the exception of the two roofing jobs, we completed all our planned tasks plus many more,” Short said.

Although the weather prevented completion of certain jobs during the all-volunteer fix-up event, the sun eventually came out and a small-but-mighty work group finished one Coupeville roof the following weekend.

Short sent out special thanks to Vivian and the kitchen crew for a hearty breakfast before work began, and a delicious dinner after the tired troops finished the blitz.

Thanks also, he said, to Beth Tristao for the quilt which was raffled of and helped to raise more than $300.

The board of Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers was acknowledged by Short, as well, for their efforts throughout year. Board members include Chet Baker, Vivian Rodgers-Decker, Joy Linde, Alice and John Schisel, Beth Tristao, and Short.

The 2011 workday has been scheduled for Saturday, May 7. The 2010 T-shirts, $10 and hats, $15, are still available on the Web site.

Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers volunteers are welcome to join the group who will march in the Memorial Day parade on Saturday, May 29.

The group will be wearing the T-shirts, handing out candy and carrying the Hearts & Hammers banner.

Parade-goers will meet just before 11 a.m. near the high school at South Main Street and Terry Road.
