Deep into the second overtime period, Bellevue Christian scored a golden goal to squeak out a 1-0 win over the Coupeville High School soccer team Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Mickey Clark Field.

With only 15 seconds left in the second five-minute extra period, the Vikings, according to Coupeville coach Troy Cowan, slipped a shot through “the smallest window” and into the “most upper corner on the net” for the win.

Had the match remained tied after the two overtime sessions, the game would have been decided on penalty kicks.

Cowan said his keeper, Julia Myers, was “a stud in the box” for keeping Bellevue Christian off the board until the final shot.

“She was determined, physically overpowering and technically sound,” Cowan said. “The shot that beat her was indefensible; she played the match of her life. She was vocal and demanding of her teammates and showed true leadership throughout.”

Cowan credited assistant coach Gary Manker for Myers’ “success and improvements.”

“He puts and finds ways to get our girls ready, and what he was done with our goalies has been amazing,” Cowan added.

Myers wasn’t the only defensive standout, according to Cowan: “I have to applaud our entire defensive unit; they were simply divine.”

He labeled Jacki Ginnings, Jennifer Spark, Ivy Luvera and McKenzie Meyer “defensive juggernauts.”

Cowan called Ana Luvera, who started in a new position, a “true warrior.”

“This was a defining game and I know our Lady Wolves are going to take the lessons learned from this epic battle and put it in the bank,” Cowan said. “We are still tweaking some things but are very close to making a serious run and doing some damage in the Olympic League.”

Coupeville (1-2) continues its nonleague schedule with a 2:30 p.m. match at Orcas Island (0-2) Thursday, Sept. 18.
