What originally was reported as a kidnapping at Acorn Motel in Oak Harbor turned out to be a domestic assault incident, according to court documents.

Prosecutors recently charged Jeffrey Hurt, a 25-year-old Oak Harbor resident, with unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree assault, a domestic violence charge. If convicted of the charges, he faces up to a year and 10 months in prison. Hurt pleaded not guilty April 22.

Detective Lisa Jenne with the Oak Harbor Police Department responded to a report of a possible kidnapping at the motel April 12. It turned out that the baby Hurt snatched was his own.

Nevertheless, Jenne wrote that she found evidence of a crime.

The woman reported that she took the baby and moved into the motel because she discovered Hurt was using drugs and he was acting aggressively and unpredictably, Jenne wrote.

The woman claimed that Hurt prevented her from leaving the house by standing in the doorway, the report states, and stopped her from calling police by taking the phone. The woman said she finally got out of the house by screaming for help; Hurt moved away from the door.

According to the report, the woman brought the baby with her and checked into the motel. But that night, Hurt pushed his way into the hotel room, shoved her up against the wall and spilled hot coffee all over her, then took the baby and ran away.

Jenne found Hurt and the child at the couple’s home. He denied assaulting his wife and said he took the baby because he wanted to spend time with her.

Jenne wrote that Hurt has an extensive criminal history, including 24 arrests, eight felony convictions and seven misdemeanor convictions.
