OAK HARBOR CITY HALL features works of Helen Bates during the month of June. After a career as an educator and school administrator, Bates began painting large oil paintings in her Texas apartment. When Bates and her husband retired to Whidbey in 1994, she studied with the late Joan Brosnahan. She has since studied with Dottie Sanders and now includes watercolors, acrylics and mono-types among her work.
Mike O’Connell is GARRY OAK GALLERY’S featured artist for June. O’Connell paints with acrylics. His palette is often earthy colors, and details in his work are frequently rich with intricate symbolism and text. Sometimes in his mixed media paintings, Mike utilizes unexpected 3D elements resulting in both visual and textural delight for the viewer. “Mostly Feathers,” an exhibit featuring Govinda Rosling’s photography, is on display through June at the UUCWI ART GALLERY. Rosling photographs mostly birds, working with a variety of lenses and letting the birds come to her. She focuses on aspects of their life in each photo. THE BALLET SLIPPER CONSERVATORY will present “Cinderella” at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at the Oak Harbor High School Student Union Building. ROB SCHOUTEN GALLERY presents “Modern Relics,” an exhibit of new encaustic paintings by Kathleen Otley, through June 27. Otley incorporates wax, willow, woven metals, stones, collage and painted imagery in her pieces. Otley’s work is included in collections of the Smithsonian, Apple and ABC Television, and graces the homes of many private collectors.
Jewelry artist Bev McQuary is PENN COVE GALLERY’s featured artist for June. She will describe her Italian bead-making process 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at the gallery. Glass bead-making involves melting colorful glass rods and embellishing them with more glass. The beads are incorporated into unique jewelry pieces with silver or copper wire. The annual Whidbey Expressions art show to benefit the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ART SCHOOL opens at noon Saturday, July 23 at the Coupeville Rec Hall. An official opening gathering will take place from 4-7 p.m. Saturday. The show will also be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 24. Participating artists contribute 15 percent of their sales to the Pacific Northwest Art School, a nonprofit organization in Coupeville. The school offers workshops facilitated by world-renowned instructors in the areas of photography, painting and fabric arts. The school also offers educational opportunities for local artists, and sponsors art education for island youth. GARRY OAK GALLERY has welcomed new metal artists Steve and Maryann Nowicki. Each of the artists’ pieces are crafted by hand, with much emphasis on small details. The two are self-taught metal artists, and Steve Nowicki has developed his own metal finishes.
