Art & About

Here's what's happening on the Whidbey arts scene.

ROB SCHOUTEN GALLERY presents “Along the Water’s Edge,” a gallery of watercolors by Anacortes watercolorist Peggy Woods. This is Woods’ debut show on Whidbey. Woods’ watercolor paintings explore the play of light on water, whether glowing with strong contrast or misty and soft, creating tranquil dramas that convey the poignancy of everyday coastal life. An artist’s reception for Woods will take place during First Friday at Greenbank Farm from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 6. Light refreshments will be served. The Farm’s other galleries and shops will be joining in the First Friday fun and staying open until 7 p.m. as well. For further information, call 360-222-3070 or email info@robschoutengallery.com

ROB SCHOUTEN GALLERY presents paintings and mixed media works by Buffy Cribbs and Bruce Morrow. The artists’ works will be on display through May 2. Cribbs and Morrow’s work is complementary and creates a colorful, witty exhibition. For further information, call 360-222-3070 or email info@robschoutengallery.com

ARTWORKS GALLERY will feature artist Gaylen Whiteman’s show “May Madness” during the month of May. A First Friday reception will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. May 6. Light refreshments will be served and guitarist Steve DeHaven will perform live. Whiteman, who typically paints in a realist fashion, has recently been experimenting with abstraction and, as she says, “having a blast”. In her “May Madness” show, Whiteman will devote half of her display to favorite works in realism, and half to favorite and recent abstract art. Her art includes paintings in watercolor, acrylic and oil. For more information, visit artworkswhidbey.com or call 360-222-3010.

Mark Lucero is PENN COVE GALLERY’S featured artist for May. Lucero will attend the gallery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 30, at which time he will discuss the methods and meanings behind his paintings. He thinks of his artwork as both self-discovery and self-disclosure, so that many paintings originate from fundamental truths about human experience. His intention is to give joyous and lighthearted expression to some of life’s deeper truths. www.MarkLuceroArt.com
