A former Oak Harbor man who was wanted for a Friday Harbor arson was arrested in Langley Saturday, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Nick Hathaway with the Langley Police Department spotted the suspect, 33-year-old Dwight C. Henline, at the Star Store. He called for backup and Christopher Angle with the Island County Sheriff’s Office responded. They arrested Henline outside the store without incident, according to Langley officials.

Henline was wanted for allegedly starting an April 7 fire that damaged six businesses in the heart of historic Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Six structures were damaged by flames and three were deemed a total loss; other businesses temporarily closed due to smoke damage, Friday Harbor officials said.

On Friday, detectives served a search warrant at a residence in Langley but did not locate Henline. An arrest warrant was issued on Saturday and just a few hours later he was spotted doing some shopping.

Court documents show that Hemline has lived in Clinton, Oak Harbor and the San Juans. His criminal record in Island County goes back to when he was a juvenile.

When he was 17 years old, Hemline was arrested for attacking people who had refused to leave an infant with him while he was drunk at a Clinton home, according to court documents. He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault in the fourth degree, malicious mischief, minor in possession of alcohol, obstructing an officer and resisting arrest.

In 2015, Henline was accused of attacking his brother-in-law with a knife while he was drunk at an Oak Harbor home. He was originally charged in Island County Superior Court with felony assault but the case was settled in district court.

In 2018, Henline faced a felony explosives-related charge in San Juan Superior Court, but the case was later dismissed.
