North Whidbey Aquatic Club’s Olivia Tungate added two more national top-10 times during the Pacific Northwest Swimming Long Course championships Saturday, July 27, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Tungate, 12, won the 200 backstroke in 2:28.36, the nation’s eighth-best time in her age group. She also placed second in the 400 individual medley, posting the country’s fifth-best time of 5:17.97.
Tungate wasn’t the only Aquajet to finish among the meet’s leaders. Kelly Huffer, 13, finished second in the 400 IM (5:11.62) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:28.23).
Four other NWAC athletes recorded top-20 finishes in the meet Saturday. Emily Huffer, 16, was 13th in the 400 IM (5:20.82) and 17th in the 200 back (2:28.84).
Ashleigh Merrill, 10, raced to 16th in the 200 IM (3:09.29), and Maira Sulin, 12, placed 18th in the 400 IM (5:57.41).
Coupeville’s Cole Weinstein, 18, swam to 20th in the 400 IM (4:25.78).
Merrill also finished 26th in the 50 butterfly (39.18) and 27th in the 100 breaststroke (1:43.7), while Weinstein placed 35th in the 200 back (2:20.95) and 39th in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.08).
Other NWAC participants were Shamus Warden, 11 (33rd, 400 IM, 6:53.29; 40th, 50 free, 37.26); and Bruce Vagt, 11 (32nd, 400 IM, 6:44.56; 42nd, 200 back, 3:03.9).
The PNS championships began Thursday and will close Sunday.
