Appreciation: Precious time spent with Barney

About nine years ago almost to the day, I answered an ad in your paper offering a 5- or 6-year-old miniature Dachshund to a good home.

About nine years ago almost to the day, I answered an ad in your paper offering a 5- or 6-year-old miniature Dachshund to a good home. That is how Barney came to live with us. He was a wonderful, gentle companion.

After we had him a few years he had back problems that caused him to be paralyzed in his back legs. Thanks to The Animal Care Center, K-9 Carts (before they moved here while they were still in Montana), and especially to Chiropractic Doctor Ben Jennings of Anacortes, Barney regained the use of his legs. And even though his spirit had never faltered he ran and played with great joy and celebrated life everyday.

His great heart stopped beating in his sleep last night, but that spirit lives on. I just wanted to thank you and the people whose names I don’t even know who made it possible for us to share our lives with Barney. If ever you are considering taking an older animal I urge you not to hesitate, he enriched our lives.

“We give dogs the time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man ever made.” M. Facklam.
