An endorsement for our hospital

I would like to help dispel the negative rumors about Whidbey General Hospital. After three major surgeries over the last four years, I feel I can speak with authority about the quality of care at our public hospital.

I literally put my life in the hands of two outstanding surgeons, Dr. Fru Bahiraei and Dr. Paul Zaveruha, because of their skill and experience. They fulfilled my trust in them completely. My care from the nursing staff following each surgery was professional and compassionate. When an issue arose following my last surgery, my concern was dealt with immediately and respectfully and we were able to resolve it quickly. I cannot say enough in praise regarding the quality of care and the kindness of the nursing staff. My follow-up care with oncologist Dr. Mark Coughenour and wound/ostomy nurse, Michelle Beesley, has also been excellent.

There was also an intangible reason for choosing WGH and that was its location. Being hospitalized near my home made it easier for family and friends to visit, especially my husband, whose health situation makes it impossible for him to make frequent trips off island. Having family members and friends nearby for support and encouragement certainly helped in my recovery.

It is evident that our hospital board is working to upgrade equipment. WGH’s recent purchase of a new state-of-the-art MRI capable of producing higher quality images means that patients will not have to be referred off-island for tests.

We have been fortunate to attract highly skilled people because of the quality of life on the island, but they cannot be expected to stay if their working conditions are not commensurate with their skills. I sincerely hope that when the board decides to put the bond election on the ballot each island resident considers how valuable a publicly owned, community-based hospital is for all and votes yes.
