Both lanes of Highway 20 over the Deception Pass Bridge was closed for several hours Monday morning due to a car accident.
Shortly after 5 a.m., Christina Plummer, a 31-year-old Oak Harbor resident, was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla southbound on Highway 20 when she collided with the cables and outer bridge span that stretch over Canoe Pass, said Trooper Norm Larsen with the Washington State Patrol.
Plummer and a passenger in the car were transported to Whidbey General Hospital.
Larsen said the initial call indicated that it was a hit-and-run accident but he hasn’t found evidence yet that a second vehicle was involved in the incident. He is still investigating the cause of the morning accident.
The accident prompted closure of both lanes of Highway 20 until after 7 a.m., which prompted lengthy backups on both Whidbey and Fidalgo islands even after the road re-opened. At 7:30 a.m. the backup on Whidbey Island still stretched to De Graff Road.
