A wrong place for vandalism

A North Whidbey Middle School teacher was arrested Tuesday for allegedly inappropriately touching a 12-year-old student, Oak Harbor Police Cpt. Rick Wallace said.

Roger Jordan, 58, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree assault. Unlawful imprisonment is a felony charge.

Jordan is not accused of a sex crime.

“It initially appeared that it could have been a sexually-based crime,” Wallace said. “But after investigation, we didn’t end up arresting him on a sex crime.”

The incident occurred outside Jordan’s classroom just after school Friday, Feb. 22. Wallace said that Jordan picked the girl up off the ground and “was in the process of carrying her somewhere.”

Jordan didn’t make a statement to police and Wallace said he had “no clue” as to Jordan’s possible motivation.

The girl’s parents reported the incident to police Feb. 25. Investigators interviewed several students who were witnesses. The police are also working with school personnel, who are conducting a simultaneous investigation.

Oak Harbor School District Superintendent Rick Schulte said Jordan was put on leave while the school and police investigations continue.

Jordan was released on his own recognizance Tuesday. Possible charges are pending.

“We don’t feel he’s a danger to the victim or any other students,” Wallace said.
