Whidbey to revel in all things Irish this weekend

Shamrocks, shenanigans, corned beef, colcannon and more

From wearing the green to learning how to properly cook the greens, Whidbey offers a variety of St. Patrick’s Day events this Saturday and Sunday.

Although St. Paddy’s Day is always March 17 to commemorate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, some local festivities occur the day before — even two days before — to allow time to partake in plenty of shenanigans. Many restaurants and bars are hosting live music and offering traditional Irish fare.

Saturday afternoon, the Whidbey Island Irish Wildlife Society hosts its 46th St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Oak Harbor, beginning at 4 p.m. The next day, Coupeville gets into the green spirit with a St. Paddy’s Bash featuring the Shifty Sailors and Electric’ly Celtic leading jigs and Irish songs from 4-7 p.m. at the Coupeville Rec Hall, 901 N.W. Alexander St.

Langley and Bayview also have many activities planned, from gypsy jazz to an Irish pub party to specialty-brewed Irish beer.

Here’s some Éirinn go Brách events for north, central and south Whidbey.
