This weekend, your strikes, your spares and even your gutter balls can help out animals in need.

This weekend, your strikes, your spares and even your gutter balls can help out animals in need.

The Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation will host its first annual “Bowl Dogs and Alley Cats” fundraiser from 1 to 3:30 p.m. this Sunday, July 31 at Oak Bowl & Mario’s Pizza in Oak Harbor.

The cost to participate is $20 per person and covers two hours of bowling and shoe rental. Bowlers are encouraged to register in advance at www.waifanimals.org/lets-bowl for a chance to win one of two $50 gift cards to Popsies.

The foundation will also run a 50/50 raffle. Raffle tickets cost $10 each and must be purchased with cash at the event. The winning ticket holder will split the proceeds of the raffle ticket sales with the foundation.

Foundation Executive Director Cinnamon Hudgins said the funds raised at the event will go toward general operations and animal welfare programs, including spay and neuter coupons for qualifying low-income households, the shelter’s crisis care program and food, toys and medication for animals.

The shelter is currently managing its highest animal intake in nearly two years while trying to rebound from staffing shortages, Hudgins said.
