Upcoming Whidbey concerts feature chamber music

Island residents have a chance to experience the beginning of a new chapter of chamber music.

Island residents have a chance to experience the beginning of a new chapter of chamber music on Whidbey during two upcoming concerts.

Pianist Sheila Weidendorf, cellist Aniela Marie Perry, violinist Gloria Ferry-Brennan and violist Roxanna Patterson will combine to play the music of Debussy, Prokofiev, Haydn and Faure as RASA 4.

Weidendorf, a Langley resident, explained that “rasa” is a Sanskrit word that means qualities that are specifically applied to the arts. Sometimes RASA plays as a trio, other times as a quartet or quintet. All women in RASA 4 are from Whidbey Island, except for one.

The Western classical chamber music group will take the stage at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island in Freeland at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4. They will perform again at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Noorlag Salon in Oak Harbor, which is located at 569 Ely St.

Seating is limited at the North Whidbey concert. Weidendorf said interested parties can always reach out to her at sweidendorf@whidbey.com with their intention to attend.

“We do suggest a donation of $25, because musicians need to eat too,” she said with a laugh.

Weidendorf foresees these concerts as the precursor to a chamber music festival that the RASA team intends to start this summer, called Chamber Music on the Rock.
