Scavenger hunt offers cash prizes

An online scavenger hunt that promotes small business in Oak Harbor made its debut this month. The participant who successfully completes all of the clues first will win a grand prize of $250.

The scavenger hunt was designed by Oak Harbor native Robert Sanders as part of his business, On Our Own Arts. The unique company provides marketing for businesses through contests.

As an entrepreneur himself, Sanders said he knows how difficult it can be for businesses to gain exposure, especially at an affordable cost.

“I know how hard it can be for some of these small businesses, especially on Pioneer,” he said.

Sanders has worked with the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Oak Harbor Main Street Association and the Economic Development Council to put the hunt together. Sanders, who is a loan officer and mortgage broker at Epic Finance, is using 10% of his commissions to fund the prizes.

Sanders said he’s had the idea since 2009. He is a fan of game shows and wanted to bring a fun activity to the city.

To play, go to onourownarts.com and become a member at no cost to access the clues. The hunt lasts for the entire month of February and is split into four parts. Twenty-five new clues drop every Wednesday. Every week, $50 will be awarded to the first participant to solve that week’s clues. To win the grand prize of $250, a player must be the first to complete all four parts by March 1.

There are other prizes available as well, such as gift cards and a month’s membership to Puget Sound Golf Club.

All clues can be completed online. Answers are usually found by visiting a website of a local business. In March, Sanders is planning to continue and expand the hunt by placing clues in physical locations.

Any entrepreneurs, artists or small business owners who are interested in being a part of the scavenger hunt should reach out to Sanders at admin@onourownarts.com.
