Art & About

Here's what's happening in the Whidbey arts scene.

OAK HARBOR CITY HALL features works of Helen Bates during the month of June. After a career as an educator and school administrator, Bates began painting large oil paintings in her Texas apartment. When Bates and her husband retired to Whidbey in 1994, she studied with the late Joan Brosnahan. She has since studied with Dottie Sanders and now includes watercolors, acrylics and monotypes among her work.

Mike O’Connell is GARRY OAK GALLERY’s featured artist for June. O’Connell paints with acrylics. His palette is often earthy colors, and details in his work are frequently rich with intricate symbolism and text. Sometimes in his mixed media paintings, Mike utilizes unexpected 3D elements resulting in both visual and textural delight for the viewer. The gallery is located at 830 SE Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor. www.GarryOakGallery.com

“Mostly Feathers,” an exhibit featuring Govinda Rosling’s photography, on display through June at the UUCWI ART GALLERY. Rosling photographs mostly birds, working with a variety of lenses and letting the birds come to her. She focuses on aspects of their life in each photo. There are no regular gallery hours at UUCWI, but artwork can be viewed by those attending events and meetings in the building. Call 360-321-8656.
