Oak High School District is running two proposals. One to renew programs currently being used and proposal two would be focusing on improving math programs and increasing modern technology in classrooms.

As a student, I know that the lack of working computers in the school has already created a struggle for our teachers to book computer lab time. It will also provide extra help in middle schools for students struggling in math and reading. This levy will collect $3 million for Oak Harbor schools at a rate of 74 cents per $1,000 of property valuation.

Levy 2 is going to focus on improving math for all grade levels. It’s going to give Oak Harbor better technology for the math classrooms. I’ve been in a classroom where we used old and nasty overheads. The noise from the fan turned into a joke as our teacher did their best to talk over them. They would say things like “It’s about ready to die,” which was funny, but also kind of sad that we can’t even get a decent, working overhead.

Ten math specialists would be hired to work with math teachers and even their students. The levy rate for proposal two would only be 24 cents per $1,000 of property valuation.

If either levy does not pass, $2.4 million dollars would have to be cut from the budget over a two-year period. Also, if the levies do not pass 20 teachers and 25 support staff will be cut. Even limiting the use of the libraries, shutting down six computer labs for a certain period of time is anticipated. To vote yes for schools means to vote yes for our future.
